ROME/ATHENS SCHOLARSHIP:

E. Adelaide Hahn (1893-1967). PhD, Columbia (1929); classicist, philologist, linguist; impressive scholar of Vergil and Latin linguistics; respected professor of classics and administrator at Hunter in Manhattan (1921-1963), the CUNY college for women. The first woman president (1946) of the Linguistic Society of America which she helped found (1924), Professor Hahn became president of CAAS (1960) near the end of a remarkable career of teaching, writing, and service to scholarship. For more information, see this biographical sketch, and this wonderful personal tribute.

In honor of E. Adelaide Hahn, one or two awards of up to $6,000 will be made in the spring toward the cost of study in the summer session of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens or the American Academy in Rome (see list of previous Hahn Scholars). Applicants must have been CAAS members in good standing for two consecutive years prior to the year in which they apply. Preference will be given to pre-college teachers, graduate students, and those who have not previously received this award, with priority given to those who live and work in the CAAS region. Applicants who receive the Fulbright cannot receive the Hahn; applicants can receive up to $4,000 if they have been given another award. Scholarship winners are expected to report on their summer study at the CAAS annual meeting in October. For further information, contact Dr. Raymond L. Capra, Chair of the Hahn Scholarship Committee, at raymond.capra@shu.edu or (973) 275-5822.

To apply for this scholarship, send the following materials to Dr. Capra at the address below, postmarked by February 10, 2011:

  • a copy of your completed application and letters of recommendation for summer study in Athens or Rome
  • proof of CAAS membership for the current year and the past two consecutive years
  • a cover letter that includes a list of all sources from which you are seeking funding
  • a commitment to an oral and written report at the October, 2011 CAAS meeting.
