New York State Regents Examination: History and Validity

This panel discussion focuses on the history and validity of a state assessment system over 100 years old. The following issues will be addressed:

• teacher involvement in the process
• writing questions, pretesting questions
• assembling the exam
• checking for level of difficulty and authenticity of language and culture
• administration of the examination.

New York’s experience may serve as a model for states now seeking to develop a measurement instrument. Panelists will reflect upon their personal experiences writing and assembling the exam and participating in the process of framing the NewYork State Latin curriculum, which is the basis of the examination.
